A systematic approach to innovation: from adaptation to exaptation

There is a substantial difference between incremental innovation (dealing with articulated issues), responsive adaptation, and ‘Eureka’ innovation in which radical new insight creates radical change. Finding ways to link existing capability with novel purposes to deal with uncertainty is one proven way, illustrated by real-life stories in this talk.
Rather than depend on accidents and luck, this presentation will look at how we set up systems that manage for serendipity and the associated issues of how we manage people, create the space for dissent and find ways to gain senior management attention for novel ‘left field’ ideas. It will also address how we measure the cognitive, cultural and behavioural diversity needed to create the preconditions for innovation and how we catalyse the potential of our employees, customers and suppliers to provide new ways of working and thinking.
